UPDATE: Politifact amended their database to include ONE true statement made by Trump. The group also awarded him their annual Lie of the Year distinction!
During the high winds of a political season, virtually every candidate is caught telling half-truths, misrepresentations of facts, distorted statistics, and even outright lies. That’s why groups like Politifact and FactCheck.org have plenty of work during an election season, especially when the presidency is up for grabs. Candidates are out there on the campaign trail almost every day, spouting agitprop to the hordes and slinging sound bytes to TV cameras.
In the 2016 campaign season, we have in our midst a particularly fascinating candidate, Donald Trump, who, according to fact checkers, hasn’t made a single true statement. While his poll numbers have never been higher, his truthfulness rating could not be more abysmal. In fact, Trump could go down as the most pathologically dishonest political candidate in American history, which is impressive given our nation’s rich history of lying politicians.
According to Politifact, the vast majority of Trump’s recent statements are false, mostly false, or ‘pants on fire’ false and, literally, ZERO of his statements are true. 16 percent of his statements are mostly false; 39 percent of his statements are mostly false; and 21 percent constitute the ‘pants on fire’ status, which, according to Dead State, includes his claim that Obama wants the United States to absorb 250,000 Syrian refugees.
Other greatest hits from Trump’s distorted reality machine include the following:
Mostly false
False
- Regarding Syrian refugees, “there aren’t that many women, there aren’t that many children.”
- Under the Iran deal: “If Israel attacks Iran … we’re supposed to be on Iran’s side.”
Pants on Fire
Trump said the bogus crime graphic he retweeted came “from sources that are very credible.” False. https://t.co/BnTcWpyvDM

And as a final note, let’s recall what George Orwell said on the subject of truth and lies:
“The very concept of objective truth is fading out of the world. Lies will pass into history.”
