I’m Mnar Muhawesh, editor-in-chief of MintPress, and I will be your host. Thanks again for joining today’s conversation, where we will be discussing independent journalism, journalism as an act of activism, and where exactly is Occupy Wall Street today?
Since our corporate media consolidated from 50 corporations in 1983, to a devastating six by year 2000, we saw a dramatic shift in the way news media operates — from acting as a government watchdog, to a government lapdog. Engaging in extreme crony capitalism, these six corporations are tied to “Big Pharma,” the defense industry and many more who have a close relationship with the U.S. government in order to succeed in the global market.
In a direct response to this though, we’re actually experiencing a renaissance of sort, with independent media outlets emerging to restore the Fourth Estate and bring back truth to journalism. In fact, over 65 percent of Americans don’t trust the media, according to a Gallup poll taken last year.
And pioneering an effort to bring attention to those really important stories that the media ignores, is activist, filmmaker, writer and host of Acronym TV — Dennis Trainer Jr., who also directed the documentary “American Autumn.”
